I like to use a variety of browsers in my line of work as a computer technician.  Sometimes I use my own browsers but sometimes I need to use the browsers that are installed by my clients on their computers.  I’ve noticed several frustrations and some pleasant surprises with certain browsers that I would like to share with you.  I’m sure other computer repair places near me have noticed similar things.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  Microsoft Edge

I’ve used Microsoft Edge as a secondary browser for many years.  By secondary browser, I mean that I run a primary browser 24/7 and occasionally open Edge as needed.  I do this for several reasons.  The main reason for doing this is to access multiple email accounts without having to sign in over and over again.  This works the same with social media accounts.  In fact, this method is handy when juggling multiple businesses.  Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that Edge freezes and is often slower than my primary browser for many tasks.  Fortunately, I don’t use it as my primary browser because this would drive me crazy.  However, I notice freezing happens when Edge has an update, which happens a lot with Microsoft products.  Their stuff really likes to get glitchy and freeze with pending updates.  That’s probably why most computer repair places near me don’t use this browser.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  Chrome

As a business owner, I absolutely LOVE the Chrome browser.  First of all, you can sign into a google account and all your computers can have the same history, passwords, and bookmarks.  I absolutely love that feature.  Second, they have this new split screen feature which comes in very handy when you are working on a project that requires you to toggle between two tabs.  As a matter of fact, split screen allows you to look at both tabs at the same time right next to each other.  Finally, I feel that Chrome is very intuitive to use, it’s not difficult for beginners to use.  I find this especially true for people who aren’t very internet savvy or for youngsters.  Additionally, most computer repair places near me will use Chrome to run their business online.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  Opera

My absolute favorite thing about the Opera browser is the built-in privacy.  It can put your location anywhere in the world, no need for a VPN.  This is a wonderful feature if you like to access videos on Netflix that you can’t access as a US resident.  Or if you simply don’t want websites to know your true location.  Additionally, there is a feature called “Tab Islands” which enhances your use of the browser.  In fact, your tabs are grouped together, and color coded in the most fantastic way, I really love this feature.  If you haven’t tried it, then I would highly recommend it.  Unfortunately, this isn’t really a browser for computer repair places near me to us.  Sorry my fellow shops, you’ll need to skip this one.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  Firefox

Firefox is well known for its wonderful privacy and security features.  Although it can be hugely debated that many other browsers are now at the same level as Firefox.  In fact, many modern browsers use the same privacy and security features.  Unfortunately, there is a drawback with Firefox; it has a hefty updater that runs on your computer’s background.  If you run Firefox, then simply turn off the automatic updater and you should be fine.  Otherwise, your stuck with a resource hog that updates whenever it feels like it.  All in all, Firefox is a very good browser that also uses an email address to remember all your passwords, favorites, and history across your devices.  Additionally, some computer repair places near me recommend this browser for advanced internet users.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  Brave

My favorite thing about Brave is their awesome “Brave Search Engine”.  It’s wonderful to see another search engine that is NOT Google list small businesses on their site.  As a matter of fact, Brave has another wonderful feature called “Brave Shields”, which enhances ad tracking and blocking.  In my opinion, this allows for a more enriched browsing experience and makes Brave a bit better than other browsers.  Unfortunately, Brave isn’t without its issues, including glitches and complaints about the Crypto rewards system.  However, if you are looking for a good browser that isn’t common, then I would recommend Brave.  It’s definitely for people who like to think “outside of the box”.  I find that most of my clients turn to Brave when they are completely frustrated with all the other browsers.  Sadly, I don’t know many computer repair places near me who have seen this browser often.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  Tor Private Browser

If you are looking for some extremely crazy privacy on your browser, then Tor is the way to go.  In fact, the Tor browser is considered one of the most secure browsers to ever exist.  It allows for lots of anonymity and uses relays to mask you, which is just perfect for advanced users.  Obviously, you should still avoid sites that use malicious exit nodes because like anything, it’s not 100% foolproof.  However, it is a browser full of security features that mankind has ever seen on the internet.  Unfortunately, it’s high security features don’t allow for the best streaming or logging into accounts regularly.  This is probably the only drawback.  Otherwise, it’s great for perusing the internet and looking at most questionable websites.  I also know many computer repair places near me who only recommend this browser to advanced users.  It’s not meant for newbies.  Sorry guys.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  Duck Duck Go

Duck Duck Go is basically another Chrome with slightly enhanced features.  Most people prefer Duck Duck Go simply because it has zero ties to Google.  Of course, this usually means that those are the people who boycott Google.  In their quest for world dominance, Google has upset LOTS of people in the world.  Most of them use Duck Duck Go.  As a matter of fact, Duck Duck Go uses Apple for maps and partners with Bing (Microsoft) for searches.  The biggest attraction for this browser is that it is NOT GOOGLE.  Otherwise, there isn’t really a good reason to use it according to most computer repair places near me.

 

Computer Repair Shop Browser Recommendations:  A Word About VPNs

Some browsers have built-in VPNs that typically carry an extra fee.  In other words, you need to pay for the VPN in the browser to be able to activate this feature.  Other browsers have such high security features that a VPN isn’t really needed.  All in all, I don’t particularly recommend VPNs, as long as you are a safe user online.  Unless your doing some pretty nefarious stuff (like selling a kidney illegally), you really shouldn’t need one.  As a matter of fact, most computer repair places near me would never recommend a VPN to the average Joe.
