Summer PC Repairs

It’s that time of year again!  We have witnessed nearly 100-degree weather this summer, and the heat is enough to melt your computer’s parts.  If you have ever left your computer in your car in this weather, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.  This summer’s heat can leave you needing PC repairs at least once.

Summer PC Repairs and Melted Components

95 Degree weather may not be enough to damage your computer on its own.  However, if you combine the heat that saturates your hot vehicle and the 95 degrees, then it’s a recipe for disaster.  In the best of cases, the case of your computer melts, causing no damage to the electronic components of your computer.  Unfortunately, most people aren’t so lucky.  In fact, your computer can cook from the inside to the outside within a couple of hours.  In some cases, even the screen can completely stop working if left in extreme temperatures.  I would highly recommend that you do not leave your computer in your vehicle for any length of time.  There is no amount of time which is safe for your computer to avoid PC repairs.  As a matter of fact, your computer can get completely destroyed in less than 15 minutes (especially in direct sunlight).  When you drive with your computer in the vehicle, be sure to cover it to avoid direct exposure to the sun.  Additionally, use your car’s air conditioner to help keep your computer cool and exposure to heat minimal.  If you don’t keep your computer out of the heat, then you will need PC repairs at some point.

Summer PC Repairs and Overheating Issues

One of the biggest complaints during the summer days is the overheating of a computer.  In fact, most laptops that had minor overheating issues in the winter will begin to randomly shut down.  Unfortunately, there is very little that can be done to avoid those computers from shutting down.  In some cases, you can take your computer to a computer repairs shop for a thermal compound replacement.  Thermal compound is a toothpaste-like material that is placed in between your heatsink and CPU to keep your computer cool.  In most cases this can solve an overheating issue.  However, some computers are simply old and can no longer withstand any change in temperature.  If you believe that this may be your computer, then try some basic PC repairs, such as replacing your heat sink.  This simple act could add years of life to your computer.

Summer PC Repairs and Swamp Coolers

Most people don’t know that a swamp cooler cools down the air by using water.  The water from swamp coolers can enter the inside of your computers and cause damage.  In most cases, the droplets of water that cool the air can also expose your computer’s electronics to rust and other water damage.  The average amount of time it takes a swamp cooler to do such damage is approximately 18 months of intermittent exposure.  A good way to prevent damage from your swamp cooler is to make sure that your electronics are in a room where the swamp cooler doesn’t reach.  For example, in a two-story house, you can store your electronics in the 2nd story which isn’t cooled by the swamp cooler.  In most cases, there is at least one room or area that is not fully exposed to the swamp cooler.  If you can avoid having a swamp cooler altogether, then I would recommend central a/c, which does not use water to cool the air in the house.  Trading a swamp cooler for central a/c can help you avoid unnecessary PC repairs down the road.

Summer PC Repairs and Extreme Temperature Changes

It is true that you should never leave your computers in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.  As mentioned earlier, it takes less than 15 minutes to cook your computer’s components.  I’d also like to mention that if you leave your laptop in your car and it becomes dangerously hot, the components can crack when exposed to a blast of the car’s air conditioner.  This is especially true for the laptop screen.  In fact, a laptop screen can crack with just the heat of the day, or it can simply stop functioning altogether even without a crack.  The most exposure to the sun and the heat of the car, the worse the damage will be, requiring PC repairs.

Summer PC Repairs and Preparing for the High Demand of Computer Repair Shops

PC repairs are inevitable if you’ve exposed your laptop to the sun for any period of time.   Unfortunately, the summer is the busiest month for most computer repair shops.  Even if you take your computer early in the week or early in the day, it is very likely that you won’t see your computer for a few weeks.  I recommend that you call various computer repair shops and see if they have a “quick turnaround time” of a few days.  In Colorado Springs, the PC repair shop, DML Computer Repair has a turnaround time of approximately 24 hours.  Although you may not find such a quick repair anywhere else, it may still be worth calling PC repairs shops and asking about their turnaround times.
