My Life as an Intern at a Computer Repair Shop

This is all about my life as an intern at a computer repair shop in Colorado Springs CO.

Before the Computer Repair Shop

Before the computer repair shop, I would hang out with my friends after school and of course we were up to no good.  We would go to the local fast-food place and just loiter until our parents picked us up.  I’d like to say that my life was fully enriched with all the gossip and daily exchanges with my friends.  However, it was not; I was trapped in this vicious cycle of gossip, vapes, and loitering.  One day, I walked past the computer repair shop that said, “internships now open”.  Thinking that I was bored out of my mind I applied and heard back from them almost immediately.  “Welcome to the DML Family”, said the lady on the other side of the line, “we will see you tomorrow”.

Meeting New People at the Computer Repair Shop

My first day at the computer repair shop was unlike any other.  First, I was introduced to all of the computer technicians.  Everyone was extremely welcoming and sweet about meeting an awkward teenager.  Second, I was shown my work area and how all the little tools work.  I was especially interested in these tiny sheers that looked like Barbie doll scissors.  Apparently, they were wire cutters.  Finally, and most importantly, I was shown the break room, where all the technicians take their break and talk about computers incessantly.  All in all, I was beginning to feel like a part of a big family.

Learning New Things at the Computer Repair Shop

I always thought that learning new things should be hard, like in school.  In fact, I imagined that a technician would be teaching me the intricate details about computers and much like in school I would be completely forgetful.  Fortunately, this wasn’t the case.  I was given lots of laptops to recycle and was told, “use a screwdriver to reduce these computers to their most basic components”.  Sounds simple enough.  As my mornings turned into afternoons, I learned to reduce laptops to their most basic pieces.  Day after day, it became easier and easier to do so.  Finally, I started learning the names of the parts and eventually I could carry full conversations about them.  I even have this feeling of accomplishment that I’ve never felt before.

Getting Tips at the Computer Repair Shop

Obviously, internships don’t pay you anything.  You volunteer your time to learn a new skill, hoping that in the future it will pay off.  However, there is a silver lining.  In most cases, clients will give you cash tips for carrying their computers or for giving them advice on antiviruses.  Of course, you can’t live off tips alone, but it does give you a little extra cash at the end of the day.  Since I’m a student, those tips are much appreciated and will buy me the occasional coffee.

Lunches at the Computer Repair Shop

I love having lunch at the PC repair shop because the owner of DML Computer Repair will buy lunch for the technicians and interns frequently.  In fact, we all sit around and swap our little computer stories with each other.  It isn’t just entertaining, it’s also extremely informative.  I learn new things everyday about the dos and don’ts of the computer world.  Unfortunately, our stories are almost always cut short by a client or some kind of computer emergency but for the most part they are really fun.  If I wasn’t working at the PC repair shop, then I would definitely want to sit in on these fabulous lunches just for the stories.

Training at the Computer Repair Shop

I may be just an intern, but I get to train with the big boys.  That’s right, I attend all the training that the main technicians attend.  In fact, I’m afforded every right and luxury that they are given when it comes to training.  I especially love the goodies bags that they get from training.  In most cases, the computer technicians will receive free screwdriver sets and special mats for laptop repairs.  Which means I get those little prizes too!  It’s absolutely fantastic and I love it!

Recycling at the Computer Repair Shop

One of my main duties is to recycle for DML Computer Repair.  First, I completely remove all the major components from the laptops and desktops.  Second, I separate those components.  For example, all the motherboards are placed in one pile and all the CPUs in a separate pile.  Third, all the waste (such as small plastic and rubber pieces) are earmarked for trash disposal.  Unfortunately, not every component of computers can be recycled.  Some of it does need to be thrown away.  Thankfully, it’s a very small portion.  I have learned so much about recycling and e-waste that I would never just throw a computer away, I would take it to a recycling center.

Paid Internships at the Computer Repair Shop

Although my internship is not a paid internship, there are some that are paid.  For example, adults who are college-age and have some computer repair experience can apply for a paid internship.  In my opinion, these are the best kinds of internships because you can get paid to learn.  In fact, the pay isn’t very high (I think it’s minimum wage) but you train with the very best, like Master Technician David.  He can teach you how to put together a computer in less than 30 minutes.  Additionally, you can train with Dominic who can diagnose gaming issues quickly and efficiently.  In the end, these are the best guys in the field, and you will get to learn from them.  Take advantage of that.
