Computer Repair Story for September 2024

DML Computer Repair has many heart-warming stories about both clients and technicians.  This is a story about the beginnings of one of our most successful computer repair technicians at DML Computer Repair.

Computer Repair Story:  The Old Computer Technician

As the “old guy” at DML Computer Repair I am considered the most experienced computer technician.  Most of the new computer repair technicians become my trainees at some point in time during their training.  In fact, most new computer technicians train for several years under my leadership.  Additionally, I am proud to have trained some of the best computer technicians in Colorado Springs.  My training methods are rigorous and require a lot of discipline.  I would say that 25% of my trainees don’t make the cut.  As a matter of fact, they wash out and can’t handle the pressures of the computer repair world.  In most cases, however, my trainees move on to be fantastic computer technicians and my efforts are rewarded.  I’ve seen trainees move on to the Department of Defense, work at big store computer repair shops, and even become teachers and mentors.  In my training I provide guidance 8 hours a day, 6-7 days a week.  Additionally, the trainee observes my repairs and dealings with customers for several months before they can attempt to repair their first computer.  Fortunately, the trainee doesn’t work on their first computer with a client’s computer, rather they use donated and recycled computers to practice repairs.  Furthermore, this part of the training also lasts for several months.  After about 2 years of shadowing and training, the trainee is finally allowed to make repairs on client computers.  By this time, they are seasoned and well-practiced computer technicians.

Computer Repair Story:  The Novice Computer Technician

One of my most accomplished trainees is Dominic.  He began working for DML Computer Repair during an internship when he was 15 years old.  At first, he was eager to greet clients and open computers for repairs.  However, that is not the way we do things at DML Computer Repair.  He tried to move forward faster than our training allowed and became frustrated.  In fact, Dominic did not have the discipline and patience typically required of our trainees.  For the first few months, I sat with him and patiently showed him that observing a senior technician was extremely beneficial.  In addition, I slowly introduced him to minor computer repairs with recycled computers.  One day, I was attending to a client, when Dominic jumped in and said, “I know how to do that, can I help”?  I was shocked because it was a custom gaming computer, and the issue was extremely difficult to diagnose.  With the client’s permission, Dominic installed a program and within minutes had a diagnosis of what was wrong with the computer.  I replaced the part in question and the computer began working perfectly again.  After the client left, I asked Dominic how he knew to run that test and he said, “I’ve been practicing at home”.  From that point forward, when a difficult gaming computer came into the computer shop, I asked Dominic if he had any advice to diagnose.  Within a year, he was perfectly diagnosing almost all the custom gaming computers for DML Computer Repair.

Computer Repair Story:  Helping Each Other

After working together for several years, Dominic and I helped each other with diagnostics.  I would teach him what I knew about computers, and he would teach me his new diagnostic methods for custom computers.  In fact, it became common knowledge at the computer shop that we were dividing the work based on the type of repair it was.  For example, a gaming computer would be given to him, while a regular laptop was given to me.  If I ran into an issue, then he assisted me with newer repair methods.  If he ran into an issue, then I assisted him with older repair methods.  Additionally, it has been a completely symbiotic relationship for 7 years.

Computer Repair Story:  The Best of Friends

Dominic is not only an employee that I work with, but he is also one of my best friends.  We work on difficult computer diagnostics together and help each other figure them out.  As a matter of fact, when a seemingly impossible job comes into the shop, we often sit and research the issue together.  Furthermore, the first person to come up with a viable solution buys more coffee or hot chocolate.  In fact, we play Call of Duty together and World of Warcraft.  We run in the same gaming circles and share points and achievements.  Dominic is one of my closest friends, despite the fact that he’s 20 years younger than me.  We speak the computer language and run the same computer games.  I can’t imagine life without my friend.

Computer Repair Story:  The Best Gaming Computer Technician

Dominic is not just a gaming computer technician; he is considered one of the BEST gaming computer technicians.  Over the past 2 years, he has developed quite a following both in the shop and online.  In fact, contributing to his popularity is the fact that he writes a blog for the computer shop.  However, his biggest following comes from his knowledge of diagnosing gaming computers. For example, he can diagnose a gaming computer with 100% accuracy in less than 30 minutes.  This record is actually excellent, considering that it can sometimes take days to diagnose a gaming computer.  Furthermore, the diagnostic techniques he uses are innovative and precise.  In other words, he’s never wrong.  I’d say he’s the most accomplished computer technician from my time because he has achieved such great heights when diagnosing computers.

Computer Repair Story at DML Computer Repair

Dominic can be found at our little PC repair shop on Wahsatch and Platte.  If you need an amazing computer technician for gaming computers, he’s the guy you want to see.  Additionally, he is available most days, but by appointment only.  In other words, you need to set an appointment to get seen by Dominic.  However, when you do see him, you’ll be extremely impressed by his knowledge and diagnosing techniques.
