10 Gaming PC Fixes for 2025

I have 10 gaming PC fixes for 2025 that I’d like to share with you.  Each of these recommendations will help improve the performance of your computer in some way.  For example, a thermal compound replacement can promote computer cooling, which means that your computer doesn’t overheat.  A cool computer typically runs more efficiently than a computer that is overheating.

Gaming PC Fix #1:  Malwarebytes Scan

A Malwarebytes scan is the #1 recommendation for 2025 because most people don’t realize that they have malware on their computer.  This can happen while perusing the internet or installing new software.  In most cases, the malware attaches itself to your computer and creates all kinds of havoc.  I firmly believe that everybody should run a Malwarebytes scan every month.  Additionally, this ensures that your computer isn’t compromised while you are using it.  In fact, malware on your computer is a significant breach.  You should not take it lightly.

Gaming PC Fix #2:  Windows Defender Scan

I know that there are dozens of antiviruses out there.  Furthermore, each one promises to save and protect you from viruses.  As a computer technician, I like to stick with what works and Windows Defender works for me.  I have used Windows Defender since it was in its infancy stage, back when it was Microsoft Security Essentials.  I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good antivirus.  Additionally, it is sold for the low, low price of FREE.  Yes, it doesn’t cost you anything.  As a matter of fact, Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers all have Windows Security (aka Windows Defender) installed on them.  It is an antivirus that is built into Windows operating systems.

Gaming PC Fix #3:   Startup Items

“Startup Items” are programs that start when your computer first starts.  In fact, these programs can be enabled and disabled in the task manager.  Simply press and hold the control button, then the alt button and tap the delete button.  This combination of buttons will lead you to the task manager.  Once you open the task manager, you can simply go to “startup apps” (in Windows 11) to see the applications that are running on startup.  At this point you can enable and disable any software that is starting with your computer.

Gaming PC Fix #4:  Browsers & Extensions

If your computer has tested positive for malware, then you will want to check your browser extensions.  In most cases, malware has attached to your computer through browser extensions.  There are several ways to reach browser extensions, depending on the browser you are using.  I would highly recommend “googling” your browser and how to get to your extensions.  In fact, browser extensions can create all kinds of havoc on your computer.  Make sure to disable any browser extensions that you don’t recognize or don’t remember installing yourself.

Gaming PC Fix #5:  Hardware Cleaning

As mentioned in my previous blog, hardware cleanings are a wonderful way to extend the life of your computer.  In most cases, your hardware simply needs a good dusting, and your thermal compound needs to be replaced.  As a matter of fact, hardware cleanings can also make your computer run more efficiently by keeping your CPU cooler.  This means that your CPU doesn’t run as hot and is, therefore, more efficient.  I would highly recommend this gaming PC fix if you noticed your CPU lagging or your computer is experiencing random freezing.  Most people prefer to take their computer to a computer repair shop for this type of work.  However, you can also perform hardware cleanings yourself if you have the know-how.

Gaming PC Fix #6:   Cooling Pad for Gaming Laptops

Gaming laptops can be extremely finicky computers.  In fact, most gaming laptops get very hot, especially during heavy gaming.  Unfortunately, a hardware cleaning doesn’t always resolve the issue because some gaming laptops just run hot.  If you have one of those laptops, then I recommend that you buy a cooling pad.  A cooling pad is a device that is placed underneath your laptop to keep it cool.  In most cases, there are several fans on the cooling pad, which help contribute to a cooler environment.  Most cooling pads are only $20-$30, especially when purchased on a site like Amazon.

Gaming PC Fix #7:  Solid State Hard Drive

These days, we expect everything on a computer to “click” immediately or “load” really fast.  However, your computer may not have the capability of reaching these speeds.  If your computer has a mechanical hard drive, then it is likely that it is slow.  Mechanical hard drives are much slower than their solid-state counterparts.  In fact, it is the fact the mechanical hard drives still use “mechanical” parts that keeps them from being faster.  On the other hand, solid state drives have no moving components and work with lightning-fast speeds.  Although there is no proof that solid state drives last longer, they are more efficient.  In other words, whether you have a mechanical or solid-state drive, you will need to replace them in 3-5 years.  Of course, this is only true if you use solid state drives with a 3–5-year warranty.  Solid state drives with only a 1-year warranty, tend to last only about a year.  It’s best to pay for the slightly better drives and have it last longer.

Gaming PC Fix #8:  Upgrade Your RAM to 32GB

I didn’t realize how much RAM most games require while you’re playing them.  If you are playing a game, running Discord, and watching YouTube Videos, then you may not have enough RAM.  These 3 simple actions typically use about 17GB of RAM.  If you only have 16GB of RAM, then you are falling short on RAM.  For this gaming PC fix, I recommend having at least 32GB of RAM.  In most cases 32GB of RAM only costs about $60, which means that it doesn’t cost a fortune to upgrade.  In fact, most people find that their computer runs faster and more efficiently with the extra RAM.

Gaming PC Fix #9:  Hardware Benchmark Test

Once you’ve performed all the previous gaming PC fixes; you’ll want to test your hardware for defects.  Find yourself a good Benchmark test and run a benchmark on your hardware.  In most cases, the benchmark test will have built-in results to help you read the test.  For example, a benchmark test that shows that all of your hardware tests the same as 75% of other users.  In this case, you can assume that there is nothing wrong with your hardware and it is testing within normal range.  If you can’t understand the tests, then take your computer to a computer repair shop near me for assistance.

Gaming PC Fix #10:  Driver Updaters

I have a HUGE distaste for driver updaters.  As a matter of fact, I find that they break your computer, more often than they fix it.  First of all, there are thousands of drivers in the world today and driver updaters tend to install the wrong drivers more often than not.  Second, there is NO NEED to update drivers unless there is something wrong with your system.  For example, a game gives you a message that your video driver needs to be updated to play the game.  At that point, you can update your drivers, otherwise, there’s no need.
