Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs

With Windows 10 no longer being supported by Microsoft, there will be a ton of computer repair shops performing an overabundance of desktop repairs this fall.  Here are some desktop repairs that you can expect to see in the quest of making Windows 11 compatible.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:  Upgraded RAM

Many Windows 10 computers only have 4GB of RAM, even though, ideally, they should have 8GB.  Optimally, Windows 11 runs its very best on 16GB of RAM, but it runs pretty well with 8GB of RAM.  As a matter of fact, if you want to prepare your computer for the next version of Windows, you should probably have 32GB of RAM.  In most cases, 16GB of RAM will be more than enough though.  However, if you are a gamer then you may want that 32GB of RAM either way.  Most modern games require 16GB of RAM, which means you’ll want 32GB just to be sure.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:  Upgraded Hard Drive

If you have a mechanical hard drive, then you will definitely want to upgrade to a solid-state drive.  In fact, Windows 11 doesn’t run at its very best on mechanical hard drives.  It’s slow and sluggish and simply performs poorly.  Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to a solid-state drive with plenty of space so that you have room for all future updates.  In other words, you should purchase at least a 250GB SSD for your Windows 11 operating system.  Ideally, you should buy a 1TB SSD to fit your operating system, give yourself plenty of space to store games and data.  If you’re a gamer, then you definitely want all that extra space for those gigantic games.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:  Upgraded Motherboard

Windows 11 requires a TPM 2.0 that is directly related to the motherboard.  If the motherboard doesn’t have this version of TPM, then you can’t install Windows 11.  In this case, you’ll need to purchase a new motherboard with the TPM 2.0 that is required for Windows 11.  In some cases, there won’t be a motherboard with an upgraded TPM for your CPU.  Unfortunately, you won’t be able to upgrade to Windows 11 if this is the case.  However, most newer computers will have a motherboard with an upgraded TPM.  If you aren’t sure about your TPM, then visit a local computer repair shop for assistance.  A computer repair shop can typically tell you if you meet the TPM 2.0 hardware requirements.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:  Upgraded CPU

I have found that most of the newer CPUs meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11.  In fact, anything newer than the i5 or Ryzen 5 seems to be upgradeable to Windows 11.  Unfortunately, older CPUs, like the i3 and 1st generation i5s don’t necessarily meet those requirements.  If you have an i3, then you will likely need a new motherboard and CPU to upgrade your computer to Windows 11.  However, there is such a thing as “forcing” Windows 11 onto computers that are older, but I do not recommend it for computers as old as i3s.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:  BIOS Updates

I have seen some computers that meet all the minimum requirements of Windows 11 but still refuse to upgrade.  In some cases, this simply means that they need a BIOS update to read the TPM correctly.  In fact, computers that have TPM 2.0 that aren’t recognizing it, may require a BIOS update.  In most cases, you can perform the BIOS update and the Windows 11 update will begin recognizing the TPM again.  However, if your TPM chip is broken, then you may need a new motherboard altogether.  I would not recommend performing the BIOS update yourself because you could brick your computer.  Instead, find a nice little computer repair shop to assist you with your desktop repairs.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:   What to Do if You Can’t Afford Upgrades.

Unfortunately, if you can’t afford the upgrades to Windows 11, there are very few options for you.  First, you could try to visit pawn shops who frequently have Windows 11 computers on sale.  The trick is to take someone with you who is savvy with computers and can direct you to a good deal.  Second, you can try to “force” Windows 11 onto your computer but on older computers this may just cause a system crash.  Third, you could keep using Windows 10 until the browsers are no longer supported.  This is a viable option for those of you who love Windows 10 and would like to keep using it.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:   An Explanation of “Forced” Windows 11 Upgrade

First of all, let me explain what it means to “force” Windows 11 Upgrade.  Forcing Windows 11 to upgrade simply means that you are using some sort of external software to cause the Windows 11 upgrader to ignore the fact that your system doesn’t meet the minimum requirements.  The installer will install Windows 11 even though your computer doesn’t meet the minimum requirements and some of the features for Windows 11 may not work.  As a technician, I have performed this method on computers that are just a little too old for the upgrade but still perform well with Windows 11.  I didn’t see any crashes and the computers did well.  I wouldn’t recommend this for computers that are really old.

Windows 11 and Desktop Repairs:  Can you Keep Windows 10?

As I mentioned earlier, one option is to keep Windows 10 and keep using it until the browsers stop supporting it.  Obviously, Microsoft Edge will stop supporting Windows 10 first.  That’s usually how it goes.  In fact, when Opera, Chrome, Firefox, and Brave stop supporting Windows 10 that’s when you can start looking for a Windows 11 computer.  This process can last anywhere from a few months to several years.  For example, most browsers stopped supporting XP years after it went out of service.  This means that theoretically, you could use Windows 10 for several more years before your browsers no longer support it.
