Stories About Gaming PC Fixes
Here’s some short stories about gaming PC fixes and how to resolve them.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: XMP
XMP is the software that comes installed in your BIOS to automatically overclock your RAM. In fact, it helps get the most performance out of your RAM. David, the Master Technician at DML Computer Repair realized that this feature can actually interfere with some games. It can negatively affect the performance of games when the RAM is already struggling. For example, RAM that is damaged and has XMP activated can malfunction and cause games to crash. This is especially true for games that require a lot of RAM usage. The gaming PC fix for this issue is to turn off XMP and use the RAM without this feature.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: Steam File Verification
Last week I posted a story about an issue I was having with a game. I tried everything from switching out the RAM to installing a GPU. Nothing seemed to work, until I ran into something called “file verification” on Steam. Apparently, you can perform file verification on your games, which will occasionally fix game issues. Unfortunately, this isn’t a feature that will fix all game issues, but it will fix the occasional problem. As a matter of fact, a game that is acting strange for no apparent reason might be able to be solved with file verification.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: Overclocking
There is a place in this world for overclocking. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that it should be done on a computer that you are going to use every day. In fact, overclocking uses a tremendous number of resources and puts much wear and tear on your computer. Additionally, a computer that is being overclocked can act in strange and unpredictable ways. I would highly recommend having 2 computers: one for everyday use and one for overclocking. If you decide that overclocking your everyday computer might break it, then undo all your overclock settings. Although the damage that has already been done to your computer is irreversible, you may still get a few good years out of it.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: Glitchy Graphics
Jane, a computer technician at DML Computer Repair helped a young lady the other day that had very glitchy graphics on her computer tower. In fact, every time she played Call of Duty the computer graphics went completely crazy. In this case, Jane determined that it would be best to change the graphics card to see if this could be the issue. Of course, this turned out to be the problem and the client ordered a new GPU. Unfortunately, solutions aren’t always so simple and usually require much more troubleshooting. Jane got lucky with this computer.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: Slow, Hesitating Game
John was helping a young man yesterday with an issue he was having with a hesitating game. Almost immediately after opening the game it would start freezing and hesitating. Obviously, he tried all the usual culprits: the RAM, the CPU, the GPU. However, in the end it was the hard drive test that told a tale. In fact, the hard drive test showed that the hard drive was failing miserably. It desperately needed to be replaced. After a complete clone of the system and replacement of the hard drive with a solid state, the game ran perfectly.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: Overheating
Izzy is a technician at DML Computer Repair who specializes in cleaning hardware. One day, a gentleman came into the shop stating that his computer was overheating and needed to be checked. In fact, he proceeded to tell Izzy that he had just changed the thermal compound and his computer should not be overheating. Izzy opened the computer only to find a huge surprise on the CPU. Apparently, the client had read somewhere that you could use toothpaste instead of thermal compound. We believe that he might have read that thermal paste is a “toothpaste-like material”, not that toothpaste can be used. Izzy cleaned up the toothpaste and replaced it with real thermal paste and the computer began functioning perfectly again.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: Old Computer, No Wi-Fi
The following story has happened on several different occasions. A person comes into the shop and says that their older computer is no longer picking up the wi-fi in their home. For some reason, it is picking up the wi-fi perfectly at our office. Typically, we need to order a newer wi-fi 6 dongle and then the wi-fi in their home will begin working again. It took us a couple of tries to figure this out. We found it absolutely strange that older computers are working on some wi-fi networks but not others. The best we can figure is these older computers seem to work best on older networks.
A Story About Gaming PC Fixes: The Glitchy Mouse
Josh came into our shop completely panicked because his mouse kept disappearing from his screen. In fact, this had been happening steadily for about a week. He would be in the middle of work and suddenly, his mouse would just disappear. He would need to reset his mouse to get it to work again. However, today there was no mouse whatsoever and even resetting his mouse wouldn’t work. David, our Master Technician, being the smart guy that he is, went up to Josh and handed him a battery. Apparently, the issue was that Josh needed to get new batteries for his mouse. This just goes to show that sometimes something that seems like a major issue, can be quite small.
