A Story About Computer Technicians Near Me

This is a wonderful little story about the BSOD, blue screen of death, “Page Fault in Nonpaged Area” and how these wonderful computer technicians near me fixed it.

The Issue as Described by Computer Technicians Near Me

The computer that I was having issues with was a desktop that kept giving a blue screen of death.  In fact, this blue screen of death is a bit unique in the computer repair world, as in we don’t see it very often.  It was the “Page Fault in Nonpaged Area” BSOD.  Usually this means there’s some kind of memory issue, but as with most blue screens of death, it could really be anything causing it.  The trick is to begin looking at the smaller issues first and then move on to the larger ones.  I had a different computer technician look at each issue to try and resolve what was causing this blue screen of death.

Computer Technicians Near Me Check the RAM

Usually with BSOD, such as this one, the first thing you want to check is if the RAM is seated correctly.  Sometimes, it can be lifted just a little bit out of place, causing this error.  If you seat the RAM correctly and you are still getting this BSOD then you should replace the RAM and see if this fixes the issue.  In rare cases, it can be the slot of the RAM that is causing the issue.  However, in this case it was neither the RAM nor the slot that was causing the issue.  In fact, the RAM seemed to be working perfectly fine.

Computer Technicians Near Me Check the GPU

Sometimes when there is a memory issue, the issue can be the VRAM of the GPU.  The best way to eliminate this as an issue is to replace the GPU with a different one.  As a matter of fact, this is the only way to check this possible issue.  David, the Master Technician, replaced the GPU for me and the issue still persisted.  In most cases, the GPU will not be the issue for this particular blue screen of death, but it is still worth checking.  I would highly recommend using the same GPU or a similar one to test.

Computer Technicians Near Me Check the CPU

In rare cases, sometimes memory issues can be traced back to an existing CPU issue.  I asked Dominic, the gaming technician, to replace the CPU for me.  He replaced the CPU with an exact copy and the same blue screen of death was still coming up.  Unfortunately, this was not going to be an easy diagnostic.  In fact, this diagnosis for this BSOD was quickly becoming a nightmare.  The usual culprits didn’t seem guilty, and I was getting nowhere with diagnostics.  Additionally, I was running out of computer technicians to ask for help.   Who should I ask next?

Computer Technicians Near Me Check the Motherboard

Next, I asked Izzy to please check the motherboard.  She ran some tests and benchmarks, but the board seemed good.  Izzy even replaced the motherboard and the BSOD continued to come up on the screen.  In fact, Izzy even tried replacing the motherboard with a different brand just in case there was some sort of conflict.  Unfortunately, this didn’t work either and she ended up putting the old motherboard back in the computer.  Our brains were turning into mush trying to figure out this particular BSOD.  But I was going to keep on asking for help and moving forward.

Computer Technicians Near Me Tested the Hard Drive

Sometimes with a blue screen of death that has a memory issue, the issue can easily be the hard drive.  I asked John, one of the hardware technicians, to please test the hard drive.  Unfortunately, he tested the hard drive, and the test came back as GOOD.  This means that there is likely nothing wrong with the hard drive.  I was slowly reaching the end of a very long rope.  In fact, I wasn’t sure where to go from here, there wasn’t anything left to test.  Maybe I should call one of the other computer repair shops and ask them for help?

Computer Technicians Near Me Are Completely Baffled

I called other computer repair shops and each of them had the exact same suggestions that we had.  As a matter of fact, they suggested we replace the RAM and the hard drive first, since it was likely a memory issue.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t resolve the problem, since those parts actually tested good. We had to approach this differently.  I was thinking that maybe I could start looking at the parts that we hadn’t replaced, like the computer case or the power supply.  However, I reached a dead end with these parts as well.  They all tested good.  Maybe I needed to start over?  Did I miss something?  It’s possible that the issue is something that doesn’t normally go wrong, maybe even impossible to discover.

Computer Technicians Near Me Finally Figured out the Issue

In the end, I don’t know if it was perseverance or just stubbornness, but I finally got it figured out.  In fact, it was such an unlikely issue that I’m completely surprised that I was finally able to fix the issue.  It turns out that although the hard drive was healthy, it needed a firmware update.  As soon as I updated the firmware on the hard drive, the computer started working perfectly, with no issues whatsoever.  This was definitely one of those situations where there is no way that anyone could have really figured out this issue.  I’m extremely proud of myself for pushing forward and finally getting the answer.  I’m especially grateful to all of the computer technicians that helped me along the way.  I could not have done it without them.
