A Story About Laptop Screen Repairs

Laptop screen repairs can be as easy as replacing a laptop screen.  However, laptop screen repairs can also be extremely difficult to diagnose and repair.  This is one instance in which laptop screen repairs proved especially challenging.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  The Problem Child

If there is a laptop screen issue, then replace the laptop screen.  It’s simple?  Right?  In this case, it wasn’t that simple.  First of all, the problem was extremely rare and presented itself like a screen issue.  In fact, the problem seemed intermittent and was not occurring in any sort of pattern (that we could tell).  The issue was that the laptop screen would “fritz out” randomly and show lines and screen flashing.  Sometimes they were vertical lines, sometimes they were horizontal lines and other times there was a flashing white light.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  Replacing the Video Cable

In most computer screen cases, where there is no obvious break in the screen, it’s common to look at the video cable for issues.  First, you want to make sure that it is secured properly.  Second, you want to wiggle it a little bit to see if this has any impact on the picture of the screen.  Sometimes a video cable issue will manifest as a screen issue.  In this case, we went as far as replacing the video cable with no success.  The issue persisted.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  Replacing the Screen

The most obvious solution with lines on a screen is to replace the laptop screen.  However, we were presented with a problem when attempting this solution.  The laptop screen was glued into place, rather than using screen adhesive.  What is the difference?  Regular glue will glue into place with very little chance of breaking the screen free without damaging the screen.  On the other hand, screen adhesive is effective in sticking the screen to the laptop lid, without damaging the screen upon removal.  This is a good example of a previous company gluing down a screen, making it harder for the next computer repair shop to diagnose and repair.  At this point, we had to ask the owner of the computer to break the screen, even though the screen might not be the issue.  The client agreed.  Fortunately, we did not break the screen upon removal.  The computer technician used a pry tool to break away some of the adhesive and free the screen from its grip.  In fact, it turns out that the issue wasn’t the screen at all; installation of a new screen still produced the same issue.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  Replacing the Keyboard and Touchpad

As we were replacing components, one of our computer technicians noticed that the screen began flickering more when the mouse and keyboard were used.  In fact, much of the issue stopped when the mouse and keyboard were not in use.  Although this was not a common symptom of a malfunctioning touchpad and keyboard, you can never dismiss possible strange solutions.  Of course, we replaced both the mouse and the keyboard, but the issue still persisted.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  Replacing the Motherboard

With several parts already replaced, we turned to the most obvious choice, the motherboard.   In fact, we believed that the clip for the video cable on the motherboard was malfunctioning.  Of course, there is no real way to prove this issue (except by replacing it with a clip, which we don’t do, since it’s soldered to the board).  Additionally, we purchased a motherboard online and replaced it.  Voila!  The motherboard replacement produced positive results.  Furthermore, the laptop screen no longer flickered or showed those awful lines.  Problem solved!

Laptop Screen Repairs:  What did we Learn?

There was so much to learn from this job.  First, we learned that things aren’t always what they seem.  What seemed to be a simple screen issue, turned out to be a complicated motherboard replacement.  Second, there are no dumb solutions.  Every solution that we tried had merit and could have led to a positive outcome.  Finally, 3 computer technicians worked together on this computer and working as a team is what produced a viable solution.  Sometimes, when you can’t find a solution, brainstorm with friends or family to help you.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  Finding the Best Computer Technician

As I mentioned before, it took 3 computer technicians to fix this problem.  It’s not that the computer technicians were incompetent.  It’s simply because the problem was very misleading.  It appeared to be a screen replacement but turned out to be something completely different.  Sometimes, working with a computer repair shop near me that allows for teamwork, is the best thing for your computer issues.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  Doing the Work Yourself

Of course, any one person could have figured out this diagnosis.  If you diagnose issues like this one yourself, then you might find yourself lacking in computer parts.  Strange computer issues like this one require you to purchase part after part and keep replacing parts until you get to the root of the problem.  In most cases, this can be an expensive endeavor.  I would highly recommend looking for a shop for computer repair near me to assist you.  It can be financially taxing trying to purchase all these parts yourself.

Laptop Screen Repairs:  Knowing When to Stop Diagnosing

Obviously, if the motherboard had not fixed the problem, the computer technicians would have kept replacing parts, until they ran out of parts to replace.  At that point, they would have condemned the computer with a strange circuitry issue.  At least that’s how the good folks at DML Computer Repair would have proceeded with this issue.  Read more about this fantastic little computer repair shop in Colorado Springs in the next section.
