New Computers and Computer Repair

When you buy a new computer, you look at many factors, such as beauty and specifications.  However, most people don’t look at the individual components of new computers and computer repair.  In fact, the life of each individual component can contribute to the overall life of a computer.  For example, if you buy a computer with a long-lasting battery, this may prevent issues in the future with the motherboard overheating.  I’ll be delving into each individual part and what you should be looking at when purchasing a new computer.

Laptop Screens on New Computers and Computer Repair

Liquid crystal displays are the most common type of laptop screen.  OLED or organic light-emitting diodes are the LED’s more expensive counterparts.  While OLED has the best performance, such as picture quality and refresh rate, the LED screens are more affordable.  Laptop screens that last the longest are those that typically have the sturdiest cases.  In other words, it’s not just the screen that matters but the case that it comes in.  For example, “Toughbook” computers have a thick frame that protects the screen in case of an accident.  Most computers have a very slim and flimsy frame that does not protect the screen very well.  In fact, this also applies to the lid of the computer.  In most cases, the lid of the computer is also extremely thin and flimsy.  If you were to throw a ball at a lid, the screen would most likely break.  In the computer repair world, we see broken screens all the time.  In most cases, the break could have been prevented if the bezel or the lid had been sturdier.  What should you walk away with?  Purchase a computer that has a sturdy frame or bezel and a sturdy lid (the top of the computer).  Purchasing a computer with a sturdy bezel and lid could prevent your screen from breaking in the future.  Additionally, not all screen breaks can be prevented with a sturdy frame.  In most situations, you’ll need to also take good care of the computer.

Power Port Replacements on New Computers and Computer Repairs

DML Computer Repair repairs at least 10 power port issues per week.  This makes up at least 10% of computer repair at DML.  Unfortunately, there are very few things that you can do to prevent this type of damage.  Most computers have a sturdy power port that is not easily damaged.  In fact, the damage usually occurs when mishandled.  For example, when someone drops the laptop while it is plugged in, and the dc jack is damaged.  In this case, it is carelessness that causes the issue, not a lack of sturdier equipment.  If you plan on using a laptop, then you must always exercise caution with the power port.  First, you want to make sure that you don’t put the laptop in a position where it might fall and break the dc jack.  In this case, you will need a computer repair shop to repair the power port.  Second, always make sure that you gently plug-in and unplug the power cable.  As a matter of fact, forcefully moving the power cable in and out causes much of the damage to a power port.  Finally, be sure to unplug your computer before you put it in a backpack or laptop bag.  If you follow these simple rules, then your computer’s dc jack will last as long as possible.

Battery Replacements on New Computers and Computer Repairs

Laptop batteries are a necessity in computers these days.  In fact, most people use their laptop on battery power most of the day.  Nickel-cadmium batteries are typically less expensive than other battery types.  Unfortunately, these types of batteries don’t last as long.  Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of battery.  First, lithium-ion batteries have a longer lifespan than most batteries.  Second, they have greater recharging cycles.  In other words, you could charge an Li-ion 500-1,000 times before needing replacement.  Third, these batteries can be recycled at any local recycling center or computer repair shop.  Finally, these batteries don’t lose their ability to charge if they aren’t fully drained.  As long as your computer has an Li-ion battery, then you have a long-lasting and affordable battery.  Even though the li-ion battery is more expensive, it also has a long list of benefits.  If you purchase a new computer, make sure that it has an li-ion battery to better serve your needs.

Hard Drive Replacements on New Computers and Computer Repair

When purchasing a computer, the hard drive should be the least of your worries.  The reason?  Hard drives are easily and cheaply replaced at most computer repair shops.  In fact, you can purchase a computer with any hard drive, good or bad, and get it replaced within 24 hours.  Which hard drive should you choose when replacing a computer’s hard drive?  First, you want to consider that mechanical hard drives go out very easily on a laptop.  If you move your laptop while it is turned on, then your hard drive will only last a few months, maybe even a year.  The reason that mechanical hard drives don’t last is because of their moving parts.  As a matter of fact, the moving parts of mechanical hard drives are exactly why you should use solid state drives.  Solid state drives are hard drives with no moving components.  Additionally, these drives make your computer faster and more efficient.  Unfortunately, these solid-state drives also have a shelf life and must be replaced every few years.  Furthermore, I like to buy Samsung hard drives because they seem to last approximately 5 years.  In hard drive years, this is a very long time.  If you want to buy a better hard drive for your computer, then purchase a solid state drive.

Power Supply Replacements on New Computers and Computer Repair

When you purchase a computer, you are given a power cable, aka power supply.  Furthermore, this power cable is what supplies power to your computer.  In some cases, the power cable is extremely thin and delicate.  I would not recommend buying a computer with a thin and delicate power cable.  In fact, thin and delicate power cables lead more to accidental breakage than larger ones.  Additionally, there are power cables with HUGE power boxes, the box that is attached to your cable.  Sometimes, with the larger boxes, they can overheat to the point of burning carpet, pillows, and blankets.  If you are looking for a new computer, then be sure to find a normal-sized cable with a small to medium power box.  In fact, you’ll find that most large power boxes are for gaming computers.  If you don’t need a gaming computer, then choose a smaller box.
